Doubts over Siddaramaiah's survival in Congress

Staff Correspondent

Some Congress leaders have taken exception to his comment on the byelection

BELGAUM: Now that the heat generated from the byelection to Chamundeshwari Assembly segment in Mysore has settled, veterans in Congress are drawing their own inferences on Mr. Siddaramaiah's temperament and are expressing doubt over his survival in the Congress.

A senior Congress leader in the city, who spoke to the Hindu on condition of anonymity here on Thursday, said that some of the Congress leaders in the district had taken strong objection to Mr. Siddaramaiah's reported comment that "Congress had gained from his victory... "

He said the comment was a clear indication of his temperament, which was apparently in sharp contradiction to the Congress culture .

Congress has never appreciated any individual projecting himself or herself larger than the party.

Those who tried to had to move out of the party. Even a senior leader such as former Chief Minister late D. Devaraj Urs was unable to stand on his own after he rebelled against former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi.

Those who revolted against the party and its high command were left in isolation. Veteran Congressman Natwar Singh was not spared either.

Such being the case, the Congress leader observed that Mr. Siddaramaiah's comment was not in tune with the Congress tradition.

By saying that Congress had gained from his victory, Mr. Siddaramaiah had only tried to say that he was stronger than the party, which he joined after being removed from Janata Dal (S), the source said.
