Gulbarga
T.V. Sivanandan
ROLE PLAY: Srikantu (centre) performing the role of Haralayya in the famous scene in which he presents a pair of slippers made from his skin to 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara, at the Karnataka Vaibhava in Gulbarga.
GULBARGA: Theatre for this trio is a passion. Artistes Sulochana from Mysore, and B.G. Vasudevan and Srikantu from Bangalore are united in their love for theatre and regularly participate at the cultural programmes organised by the Song and Dance division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Their mutual love for the theatre has taken them to Gulbarga to participate in the eight-day "Karnataka Vaibhava" song-and-dance programme organised at Chandrasekhar Patil Stadium. Sulochana, a mother of four, is an established theatre actor, who has a special passion for historical drama. The artiste's most notable roles were those of Rani Kittur Chennamma and Begum Taj, the wife of King Ibrahim Adil Shahi. Srikantu (68) is better known as "Gandhi" in theatre circles and among audiences, for his true-to-life portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi. Vasudevan has also regularly performed in dramas and cultural programmes organised by the Song and Dance division for the past two decades. He was once part of the Master Hiranayya Drama Troupe and has also performed in several television serials.
