The decision to do away with the public examinations for class VII on the grounds of cutting down the dropout rate is undesirable. Since we are facing the problem of "employability", such steps may further deteriorate the declining standards of education at the school level. Weightage to unit tests, semester examinations, project work, and assessment of personality may also be considered along with the public examinations.

Hardships galore

The hardship of employees and students who travel from Guntakal to Dharmavaram in the morning are endless as the Guntakal-Pakal metre guage passenger was cancelled due to guage conversion from Pakal to Guntakal. Fortunately, there is the Karnataka Express from New Delhi to Bangalore that goes via Guntakal and Dharmavaram. But the tragedy is the season ticket holders are not eligible to travel in it, as it is a super fast train. Hence, the railway authorities are requested to look into this problem.

Misuse of LPG

The Indian Oil Corporation recently issued instructions barring the use of 14/15 kg LPG cylinders for purposes other than domestic cooking. The restriction appears to be observed in Guntakal town more in its breach than in its compliance. Cylinders are seen diverted for extraneous use. This leads to artificial scarcity. Blackmarketeers sell it at an inflated rate of Rs. 400 and more. Measures are warranted to curb the trend.
