Dogs of many varieties take part in show

Several dogs receive consolation prizes



WINNER: A 90-kg Great Dane was the star attraction at the dog show held in Bijapur on Sunday. It won the first prize in the event.

BIJAPUR: Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Belamagi on Sunday called upon people to be compassionate to animals, particularly those kept at home.

Giving away prices at a dog show held here under the joint aegis of the Department of Animal Husbandry, the Veterinary Doctors Association, the zilla panchayat and the Police Department the Minister said there were many virtues to be learnt from dogs known for their loyalty to their masters.

A Great Dane owned by Basavanabagewadi MLA, Shivanand Patil, won the first prize.

His nephew Shriharsha Patil, who received the trophy, said it was one among nine dogs owned by his family in their farmhouse on the outskirts of the city. The dog helped guard the property, he added.

The weight of the dog that won the price was little over 90 kg, he added A breed of Mudhol Hound belonging to Prashant Pawar won the second prize while a Lhasa Apso of Shaila Bidari came in third place.

Many others won consolation prizes. Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, S.G. Konapur, said over 150 dogs of different varieties such as German Shepherd, Doberman, Pomeranian, Golden Retriever, Saint Bernard and Labrador took part in the show.

Bijapur MP, Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, who formally inaugurated the show, expressed surprise that people of Bijapur and elsewhere in the district owned dogs of so many varieties.

Deputy Commissioner in-charge Rajeev Ranjan, Superintendent of Police Seemant Kumar Singh, and president of Bijapur Canine Club Pranesh Jahagerdar were present.

An acrobatic show by a police dog squad and training session on dog-rearing were arranged on the occasion.
