TRS to block road for power

Special Correspondent

Party to rope in thousands of ryots on December 29 demanding nine-hour power supply

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has finalised a day-long programme to block the "Rajiv Rahadari" from Hyderabad to Mancherial on December 29 by mobilising thousands of farmers to mount pressure on the State Government to supply nine hours of power to the agricultural sector.

TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao held a meeting with party functionaries from all Telangana districts here on Sunday to discuss arrangements. Mr. Rao would lead the agitation up to Shanigaram on Medak - Karimnagar border and senior party leader, A. Narendra, would be in-charge beyond that point. Farmers from southern Telangana districts would fill the road till Shanigaram and their counterparts from the north part would take over from there.

Mr. Rao told a news conference that the agitators would stand guard throughout the 250-km route from Tumukunta on the city outskirts to prevent movement of traffic from morning till evening. A kitchen would be run every one km to provide them food.

Artificial power scarcity

The TRS chief said the party was forced to take up the programme as the Government was reluctant to generate hydel power for the farm sector despite good water levels in reservoirs. The Government created an artificial scarcity of power that caused problems to farmers of Telangana who were dependent on groundwater, he said. It was done immediately after Karimnagar by-election.

He said that power expert, N. Tata Rao, had defended the agitation by Telangana farmers. Yet, the Government was unmoved. He added that the Government's reluctance to supply power for more than seven hours was unpardonable.
