HYDERABAD: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has said that the different approach adopted by Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders during the freedom movement to free the country from the foreign yoke ultimately proved to be effective. Releasing a book `Indian national movement in retrospect', edited by N. G. Rajurkar, former Head, Department of Political Science, Osmania University, here on Sunday, he said while others used arms and explosives (in such struggles), the country did not adopt the same method. And most importantly the leaders took to an "ethical" approach. Not that the armed struggle did not have an impact, Mr. Patil stated. The Home Minister emphasised the need for adopting the core values of the freedom struggle in achieving future goals.
Policies
Referring to post-independence policies, he said the country had been adopting a balanced approach. Citing the economic sector, he said the country had not accepted extreme principles, but was following mixed economy. By blending the best from various concepts it had created a new system. Praising the erudition and eloquence of Prof. Rajurkar, he said the book was a sort of a history of the country's independence struggle. It would help readers understand better the ethos of the freedom struggle. Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy, recalling the sacrifices made by the people during the freedom movement, said the book had been brought out at a time when the country was moving on the path to attain economic independence.
Compilation
Prof. Rajurkar said the book covered almost every aspect of the freedom movement. It is a compilation of presentations made at a seminar by academics, historians and others in 1986. K. Purushottam Reddy, former head of the department, spoke. Later, Mr. Patil felicitated M. Gopal Reddy, a freedom fighter.
