Naxalite violence on the wane in Karimnagar: SP

Staff Reporter

Offences come down to 28 cases in 2006

KARIMNAGAR: Thanks to people-friendly policing, the naxalite movement is on the wane in Karimnagar district. There is no fresh recruitment of youth into the naxalite fold, no sensational offences and the Maoists' strength had come down to only 10 underground cadres in the district.

Besides, Maoist naxalites have suffered a deathblow with the encounter of its state committee secretary Madhav and the Karimnagar West district committee member Katkuri Ramulu alias Praveen and the surrender and arrest of its several top cadres during this year in the district.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Superintendent of Police Devendra Singh Chauhan said that the extremists' offences had come down to 28 cases in 2006 when compared to 105 cases in 2005.

In four exchanges of fire, seven naxalites were killed, including three Maoists. The police had also recovered 12 weapons, 91 rounds and 57 mines during this year.

Counselling programme

Inspired by the police counselling programme and relief and rehabilitation package, about 25 naxalites surrendered during this year to lead a normal life. This year, there were arrests of 85 naxalites of various groups including the Janashakti central committee member Kura Rajanna and other state cadres and district leaders.

The SP said that there was no fresh recruitment of cadres into any naxalite fold in the district in 2006.

He said that they could successfully diverted the rural youth towards development by providing them employment as home guards, private security guards and other opportunities.

He attributed decline in the naxalite crime rate to active participation of people in policing.
