ONGOLE: Union Minister of State for Human Resources, D. Purandhareswari, has expressed happiness over increased awareness among youth about sports but felt the need to improve infrastructure facilities at mandal and district levels.

Inaugurating the State-level volleyball tournament for boys and girls at PVR High School grounds here today, Ms. Purandhareswari exhorted the youth to draw inspiration from Koneru Hampi, Sania Mirza and Gopichand who made their mark at national and international sports meets and excel.

Saying that while China had won 316 medals, India had to content itself with just 54 medals and seventh place at the world sports meet, she wanted the sportspersons to put in their best efforts to improve the score.

She complimented former MLA, Eedara Haribabu, for hosting the event under the aegis of NTR Kreeda parishad.

About 700 boys and girls from all the 23 districts came to take part in the inter-district volleyball tournament being held here from December 24 to 27. Earlier, speaking to newspersons, Ms. Purandhareswari said that Medak has been chosen for locating Indian Institute of Technology in Andhra Pradesh because it has better road and rail connectivity and greater access to industries than Adilabad.

Asked about the proposal to shift Tobacco Board office from Guntur to Karnataka, she said that all MPs from Andhra Pradesh would thwart such efforts.
