SHIP OF THE BEACH: A camel ride on the beach organised as part of the Malabar Shopping Festival in the city on Sunday.
KOZHIKODE: The ongoing Malabar Shopping Festival witnessed a huge turnout of people on Sunday. The trade fair attracted large crowds. A bamboo house set up by Kerala State Bamboo Corporation is proving to be a big attraction. Bamboo has been used to make the bedroom, drawing room, kitchen and bathroom of the house. There are stalls by the Kerala State Bamboo Mission, Uravu, a non-Governmental organisation, and the Kerala Forest Research Institute. Uravu has displayed lampshades, chairs, pens, pen stands, clocks, hangers and other products made of bamboo. Cane furniture is also displayed at some of the stalls. Coir mats and other coir products can be bought from the stalls of the Directorate of Coir Development. Hanveev products are available at 30 per cent rebate. Products such as `murukku' and Kozhikode `halwa' made by industrial clusters are also on display. Handicrafts items are on show at the Kairali and Surabhi stalls. The stalls put up by the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board display footwear, silk and cotton saris. The stalls put up by private industries provide an opportunity for buyers to seek products ranging from exercise equipment to textiles. Some of the products which have attracted buyers include eco-friendly septic tanks and electronic two-wheeler. Air conditioners and other home appliances are also on display. Amusements for children have also been arranged. Shows by Jumbo Circus will be held at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. every day till February 5. A 10- member Russian troupe is the highlight of the circus. A health seminar was organised in connection with the festival on the topic `How back pain can be cured through yoga.' Yogacharya Vijayaraghavan of the Satyananda Yoga Research Centre said lifestyle often led to back pain. One could prevent and check back pain by taking up yoga, he said. Abdul Gafoor of Satyananda Holistic Hospital spoke on the relevance of acupuncture in modern treatment system. N.V. Sivan, medical director, Malabar Eye Hospital, spoke on `How blindness can be cured.'
Helicopter ride
North Zone IG M.N. Krishnamoorthy will inaugurate the helicopter ride being introduced in connection with the festival on Monday. Corporation Town Planning standing committee chairman Kanangott Haridas will also take the inaugural flight, which will begin from Karipur airport at 10 a.m. The ride will be till the Medical College grounds here. The ride will be from 11 a.m. to 12 noon and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on all days till December 31.
Prizes
Those who have not won any prizes so far in the draw of lots of the coupons distributed in connection with the festival are requested to retain their coupons. These will be taken along with other tickets for daily draw of lots and for the bumper prize. Coupons have to be checked with the numbers published in newspapers. One should ignore the `zero' preceding every published number. Those who win prizes should immediately report to the Malabar Shopping Festival office at Aradhana Tourist Home, Kallai Road (Ph: 0495 3012514, 3012515, 3012516).
