BANGALORE: Senior officers of the department should recognise the work of foresters and forest guards in the protection of forests. Officers should respond to the problems of those working at the ground level and encourage them to work better, Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology C. Chennigappa has said. Speaking at the release of the diary brought out by the Karnataka State Foresters' Association here on Sunday, Mr. Chennigappa said it was because of the committed work of the foresters and guards that the forests in the State were being protected.
Prompt action
Giving an example of the work of two such persons from Bellary, Mr. Chennigappa said, "It was following their report that I visited Bellary and took action against the illegal transport of forest produce. Their prompt action helped in saving Rs. 1,500 crore worth of forest produce," he said. "Though my action triggered a lot of talk, I was not worried. I have faith in the work done by our men," Mr. Chennigappa said. The foresters, the Minister said, had a greater responsibility in protecting the forests. "You should work more, prevent cutting of trees and vigorously undertake afforestation programmes," he said.
Facilities
The State Government, he said, would look into the salary difference among various posts and study the promotion issue. The Government would provide facilities to foresters and forest guards, the Minister added.
