CHENNAI: A host of public figures, led by the Governor, on Sunday greeted the people on the eve of Christmas and called for fostering communal amity. Noting that Jesus Christ preached compassion and love, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said: "Let us on this festival rededicate ourselves to uphold the spirit of brotherhood and harmony and promote peace and mutual affinity." Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said Christ stood for humanism and urged the people to promote tolerance and strengthen the bonds among themselves.
"Preserve unity"
All-India Anna Dravida Munentra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa has urged the people to protect the country's unity and integrity and imbibe the spirit of service. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy called for propagating Christ's ideals of love, sacrifice and compassion. Vijayakant, founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, said his party would imbibe the teachings of Christ of showing no discrimination against people and working for the uplift of the downtrodden. S. Ramadoss, founder of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, said that at a time when the world was hit by war mongering and violence, the people should follow the message of Christ.
K. Krishnasamy, founder-president of the Puthiya Tamizhagam, was among those who extended greetings to the people.
