HASSAN: The Government had accorded permission for two hydro power generation projects while the primary survey for one major and four minor hydro power generation projects in the Western Ghat region of Hassan district is on.

This information was disclosed by the Deputy Conservator for Forest (DCF) Hassan Division as Sashi Kumar H.P., a resident of Hassan, had sought this information under the Right to Information Act. The copy of the reply was released to the press by the Malenadu Janapara Horata Samiti.

The two hydro power generation Units that obtained permission from the Government are: Kempole Minor Hydro Power Generation Unit and the Kaadumane Minor Hydro Power Generation Project.

These seven projects fall under the Kempole Reserve Forest, Moorkannugudda Reserve Forest, Kabbinale Reserve Forest and Bisle Reserve Forest areas.

The Government had not accorded permission to the Nagarjun Company for Nayakanahole Hydro Power Generation Project.

The official said forests were not being destroyed owing to development works. There was a proposal to build trenches near the Hassan-Madikeri border to prevent entry of elephants , he added.
