SHOWCASING TALENT: Folk artistes from various districts participated in the janapada jaatre in Hassan on Saturday.

HASSAN: The Vidya Nagar area in Hassan was flooded with people on Saturday evening. More than 5,000 people gathered to witness the janapada jaatre that was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Ashwathanarayana Gowda in the presence of MLA H.S. Prakash and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamdaar.

Mr. Prakash said folklore inspired people. In the olden days "harikatha shravana" (mythology stories) were very popular but with the advent of orchestra, its popularity had waned.

It was Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy who revived folklore and folklore festivals were being held regularly, he added.

S.M. Anand, MLC, said through folklore one could visualise rural life.

Zilla Panchayat president Annappa Shetty said songs of sowing and harvest had not lost their popularity even today. Mr. Ashwathanarayana Gowda said to rejuvenate folklore, such programmes were organised all over the district. Troupes from Bangalore Rural district, Beesu Kamsale troupe from Mysore, Suggi Kunitha troupe from Karwar and the Goravara Kunitha troupe from Bidar displayed their talent during the event.

    Local troupes

In addition to this, local troupes on Chitti Mela and Pata Kunitha also exhibited their talent.

Folk songs and dances were rendered by students of the Government Science College. Kumari Chitralekha will direct folk dances by the CSI School of Drama.

Earlier, there was a colourful procession of folk artistes in Vidya Nagar.
