SEEKING MASTER PLAN: CPI(M) State secretary N. Varadarajan and central committee member T.K. Rengarajan with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on Sunday.
CHENNAI:
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday promised to present a plan in the Assembly in January, 2007 to end manual scavenging in the State.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N.Varadarajan, who, along with central committee member T.K.Rengarajan, called on the Chief Minister here, pleaded for evolving a master plan to eliminate manual scavenging. Mr. Karunanidhi had told them that he would immediately look into the issue, Mr.Varadarajan said.
House site pattas
They also wanted house site pattas issued to thousands of people in urban and rural areas. Reports that appeared in Frontline and a series of meetings organised across the State for manual scavengers formed the basis of the appeal to the Chief Minister, Mr. Rengarajan said.
