Prescribe medicines with their generic terms, doctors told

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: In a significant move, the Rajasthan Government has instructed doctors to prescribe medicines with their generic terms for treatment of patients. Doctors across the State have also been asked to adhere to the Standard Treatment Guidelines of the Health System Development Project.

State Medical and Health Minister Digambar Singh said here on Sunday that the lists of essential drugs had been sent to all medical institutions and doctors instructed to prescribe medicines mentioned in the lists.

The prescription of medicines with generic terms will ensure their easy availability and is expected to rule out the possibility of specific brands being promoted by doctors at the instance of drug manufacturers.

Dr. Singh said the doctors in charge of hospitals had been asked to ensure the availability of medicines with generic names at the Lifeline Fluid Stores and Consumers' Cooperative Stores functioning in the hospital premises. These stores will also display the comparative prices of generic drugs and those available at chemists' shops.
