COIMBATORE: Export of engineering goods from Southern Region (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala) this year is expected to be about Rs. 1,000 crore more than last year. According to M. Ganesan, Regional Director of the Engineering Export Promotion Council, engineering exports from the region in 2005-2006 were to the tune of Rs. 15,994 crores. This year, it was expected to be Rs. 17,000 crores. The region contributed 17 per cent of the All India exports. Cars, commercial vehicles, auto components, castings and machinery were some of the sectors doing well. Many of them had good orders for another two years. Even the number of exporters was going up since the larger units were running to full capacity and smaller units too were entering exports. In April 2005, the council had 2200 members from the four southern States and now it had crossed 2,600, he said.
Johannesburg
The council would open an India Engineering Centre in Johannesburg in February next year. This would initially have about 50 participants displaying product samples and catalogues. A similar centre was functioning in Chicago and another was planned in Europe. This gave international customers an opportunity to know the Indian products. About 300 buyers from African, ASEAN, CIS, European countries and the U.S. had confirmed their participation at the India Engineering meet and exhibition to be held in Noida next month. The council had recently brought down the participation rates at the exhibition and meet by about 50 per cent for the Indian units. About 100 units from South were expected to attend the meet and exhibition. An awareness meeting on engineering exports was organised at the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association here on Friday.
