TIRUCHI : Realisation of Rs.28.6 lakh through the bulk auctioning of holy cloths used for adorning the deity has prompted the authorities of the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple to introduce a tri-weekly public auction. Lasting for a couple of hours from 9 a.m., on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the auction had augmented the revenue to the temple, said its Executive Officer, P. R. Ashok. The decision of tri-weekly auction was taken, as devotees evinced interest in making high bids for the `holy cloths', he said. They pay up to 20 to 30 per cent more than the market value of the cloths.

The dresses are offered to the deity by a section of devotees in fulfilment of their vows. Apart from `pavadai' and `parivattam' the materials are mostly of polyster and silk.
