MDMK intact despite revolt, says Vaiko

Special Correspondent

Informs Prime Minister and Sonia of recent developments

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Sunday asserted that the party was intact despite the banner of revolt raised by two senior leaders, L. Ganesan and Gingee N.Ramachandran, who had been removed from key posts.

Shortly after paying homage at the samadhi of the former Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran, he told reporters here that he had brought to the notice of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi through separate letters the recent developments in the MDMK.

In identical letters faxed to Dr. Singh and Ms. Gandhi, Mr.Vaiko accused the State Government of gearing up the police to prevent MDMK activists from going near the party office, the venue of the proposed meeting of district secretaries and other functionaries slated for Monday. He also alleged attempts to disrupt the meeting.

On the basis of powers vested with him as general secretary, he had relieved Mr.Ganesan and Mr. Ramachandran of their party posts, he said. They cannot attend the meeting of district secretaries, he said.

He also alleged that attempts were made to lure MDMK general council members to attend a meeting called by the rebel leaders in Salem. Mr.Vaiko thanked All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Jayalalithaa general secretary for greeting him on leading the successful padayatra on the Mullaperiyar issue.

Meeting as scheduled

An MDMK statement from organising secretary Seema Basheer said the party's constitutional rules empowered the general secretary to convene a meeting on any date. The meeting would be held on December 25 as scheduled.
