Case filed against airport duty-free shop, one held

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Customs and Excise Department officials on Sunday booked a case against a duty-free shop at Begumpet airport.

During investigations by the department, it was revealed that the duty-free shop was selling foreign liquor to outsiders instead of passengers.

An employee of the shop Devendra Nath was arrested. "We are initiating cases against the shop for selling liquor to outsiders. Its licence will be cancelled," Assistant Commissioner (Enforcement) T. Prasad said.

Investigations by the department revealed that the shop had tampered with records meant for recording the sale of foreign liquor.

Records `tampered'

Duty-free shops at the airport should sell liquor only to bona fide passengers after checking their passport and make an entry in the sale register.

"But there are major discrepancies in the records showing clear violation of rules and regulations," Mr. Prasad said.
