KOCHI: The harmonious functioning of Parliament and the judiciary is essential for strengthening the democratic structure of the country, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi has said. Speaking at the enrolment of new lawyers organised by the Bar Council of Kerala at Maharaja's College Auditorium on Sunday, Mr. Ravi called upon the members of legal profession to ensure that their service reached the socially and economically backward sections of society. They should take care that the traditional legal ethics are reflected in their work and conduct, he said. Mr. Ravi urged the Courts to take into consideration the background of the people submitting public interest litigations against development projects. He reminded that the trend of resorting to public interest litigations for personal gains and publicity should be avoided. Bar Council Chairman and Director-General of Prosecution P.G. Thambi presided over the function and read out the oath to the participants. Mr. Ravi distributed the certificates. Bar Council of India chairman Jagannath Patnaik, Enrolment Committee chairman P. Jacob Verghese and member T.S.Ajith also spoke. A total of 415 graduates, including Francis George, MP representing Idukki constituency, enrolled as lawyers at the function. Bineesh Kodiyeri, son of the Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and Sukhiya Rajan, daughter of the Idukki District Collector A.J. Rajan were also among those who had enrolled on Sunday. A mother-son duo also enrolled as lawyers at the function. Ambikakumari, a retired Accounts Officer of the Kerala State Electricity Board and her son Anoop N. Namboothiri, from Thiruvalla, hail from a family of lawyers.
