Sanskrit scholars' meet from tomorrow

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The annual meeting of Sanskrit scholars, Sastra Sadas, will begin at Government Sanskrit College, Thripunithura, on Tuesday.

The inaugural session will be held on Wednesday, while the competitions for school and college students in recitation, `aksharaslokam' and quiz will be held on Tuesday. `Vakyarthavicharam,' discussions in Sanskrit, is the main event during the four-day Sadas.

K.G. Paulose, college committee chairman, said the Sadas had managed to keep alive the tradition of arguments, known to be inherent to the Indian knowledge system. The Sadas was started by Rajarishi Rama Varma in 1927 as part of his birthday celebrations. Later, Parikshit Thampuran became the patron of the Sadas.

The College Committee has tried to preserve the traditions promoted by the erstwhile royal court of Kochi with the endowment fund left by Parikshit Thampuran. However, with interest waning, the committee finds it difficult to invite scholars from outside the State. It represented the matter to Minister for Education and Culture M.A. Baby. It also requested the Minister to give special treatment to events such as the Parikshit Memorial Lecture and the Sastra Sadas and grant a heritage status to the manuscript library and other activities of the committee.

K.N.K. Kurup, Director-General of Centre for Heritage Studies, will inaugurate the Sadas. K.P. Prasanna, Principal of the College, will deliver the welcome speech on the occasion. Two books, one on Sanskrit karakas by R. Vasudevan Potty and another on Indian scientific heritage by K.P. Rajappan will be released on the occasion. The books are published by Sukriteendra Oriental Research Institute. On the final day of the Sadas on Friday, a commemorative meeting on Sanskrit scholar M.P. Sankunni Nair will be held.
