It will be the last term for municipal councils around Bangalore

Swathi Shivanand

The local bodies will become part of Greater Bangalore

Bangalore: The tenure of the councils of six urban local bodies around Bangalore will come to a close soon.

This attains significance because these local bodies will be merged with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) to form Greater Bangalore.

It also means that it would be the last term of these councils. More than 180 councillors from the six local bodies will leave their offices after this period.

According to a list prepared by the State Election Commission, the term of the Kengeri Town Municipal Council ends on December 28. Next in line is the Dasarahalli City Municipal Council (CMC), whose term will end on December 30. The term of Byatarayanapura CMC will end on January 1, 2007, Rajarajeshwari Nagar CMC on January 2, Yelahanka CMC on January 3 and Bommanahalli CMC on January 4.

The tenure of the other two CMCs, Mahadevapura and Krishnarajapuram, was scheduled to end much later on August 28 and October 29, 2008, respectively.

But with the formation of Greater Bangalore, the two councils would be dissolved earlier.

"Administrators will have to be appointed for all the CMCs until Greater Bangalore comes into existence," Bangalore Urban Deputy Commissioner M.A. Sadiq told The Hindu on Saturday. He added that a letter has been sent to the Government apprising it of the developments.

According to the law, the administrators have to take over the day the council term ends.

They will be in charge, i.e., perform the duties of the council in their respective local bodies, until the boundaries of their local bodies are dissolved to form Greater Bangalore, under one jurisdictional head — the BMP.

Objections and suggestions to the formation of Greater Bangalore are under scrutiny and a final notification is expected. Thirty days after the issue of this notification, Greater Bangalore will come into being.
