GPS-based system launched

Staff Reporter

Available on Hubli-Bangalore Express

BANGALORE: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu on Sunday launched Global Position System (GPS)-based location announcement system that will help the passengers in knowing the precise location of the train as well as some information on the next station.

Initially, the facility would be available only on the Hubli-Bangalore Janshatbadi Express from Monday. All the seven coaches of the Hubli-Bangalore Janshatabdi Express have been fixed with an imported multi-coloured LED matrix.

LED matrix

The LED matrix will display details of the next station, passenger amenities, contact information, public messages and instructions from Railways, Mr. Velu told presspersons here.

The messages would be displayed in English, Kannada and Hindi. A beep sound will be followed by LED display, one kilometre ahead of the next station. The angle of display ensures clear visibility through out the coach.

Mr. Velu said the Bangalore-based Vale Communications had developed the system at a cost of Rs. 16 lakh. After studying the success of the system, the facility would be introduced on other trains, he said.

Clearance

The Minister said the passenger train service between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya would be introduced once the Commissioner for Rail Safety issues clearance. The Commissioner has sought certain safety measures to be put in place to commence the service. Once that was done, passenger train service could be launched between Mangalore and Chennai, via Bangalore, thus connecting the two port cities, he said.
