BANGALORE: The Union Government must not waste any more time in granting the classical language status to Kannada, and if it did not happen in two months, all forms of protests, including State-wide bandh, and even laying siege to Parliament would be taken up, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa declared here on Monday. He was speaking at the felicitation function organised by the Bharatiya Lalithakala Samsthe, where he was honoured with a silver crown. Mr. Yediyurappa felicitated Channaveera Kanavi, the Nadoja award winner, and the energy expert H.R. Satishchandra.
Regret
Mr. Yediyurappa said it was unfortunate that the celebration of arts and the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka were on the decline of late, though Suvarna Karnataka had brought about a resurgence of interest in them. The samsthe also felicitated eminent persons in various fields such as classical singer Shyamala G. Bhave; theatre person Master Hirannayya; veteran journalist and Media Academy chairman V.N. Subba Rao; Shashil Namoshi for social service; D.S. Veeraiah for social service, Shobha Karandlaje for social service; Lakshmana Sangappa Sanadhi, M. Pithambaraswamy and B.B. Ashok Kumar for social service; N. Nanjundaiah for education; Kishore T. Reddy for providing houses to the underprivileged; M. Nagaraj for social welfare; Harish Mulki for industry; B.P. Prakash for social service; Suparna Channanna for religious service and Ghanashyam G. Bandagi for promoting sports for the handicapped. Balagangadharanatha Swamy of Adichunchanagiri Math, and Thotendra Shivacharya Mahaswamy were present.
