`India has potential to be a world power'

P.B. Srinivos, L. Revanasiddaiah, Shani Mahadevappa felicitated

Bangalore: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan on Monday said that Indians had made great strides in science and technology and that the country had a large scientific pool which could transform it into a world power.

Felicitated

Felicitating P.B. Srinivos, playback singer, the former Director-General of Police L. Revanasiddaiah, Shani Mahadevappa, theatre personality, and K.G. Nagalakshmi Bai, journalist, at a function organised by the Kannada Patrika Kala Samskriti Vedike on the occasion of Suvarna Karnataka, the Minister said that hundreds of Indian scientists were working in various organisations in the United States of America.

Mr. Rajasekharan said that 30 per cent of the scientists in NASA were Indians.

Quoting a statement made by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal in Parliament some time ago, the Minister said that there were over one crore Indians, who were considered to be the most talented in the world.

Assuring the youth that they had ample opportunities to shine in their respective fields, the Minister said that Indians were inferior to none.

Achievements

He said that recently two Indian boys, who scored the highest marks in the science quiz, were invited by NASA for a 15-day visit of the facility.

The Minister said that mere achievements without spirituality would lead to egoism and consumerism creating divisions among people. The West, particularly the United States, he said, was an economic and military power, but 32 per cent of its population was suffering from mental illnesses.

Title conferred

Mr. Srinivos was conferred the Gana Sarvabhouma title by Tontadarya Shivacharya Swamiji and the Minister. Mr. Revanasiddaiah and the vedike's president Govinduaraju honoured talented students with prizes and awards. The swamiji also spoke.
