Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: More than 200 students of the Indian Institute of Technology — Madras have landed top-notch jobs that provided them with huge pay packages, befitting the top technology institute that they emerge from. The average pay packet these students have been promised by the recruiters, in the first phase of placement held from December 1 to 8, is about Rs.75, 000 a month, says Lt. Col. Jayakumar, Deputy Registrar (Training and Placement) at IIT-Madras. According to Mr. Jayakumar, "As many as 38 companies came to IIT— M for recruiting nearly 1,000 B. Tech students. Contrary to calling one or two companies a day for recruitment, this year we called five companies a day," he noted.

The financial company Bloomberg recruited five students at a salary of $90,000 (around Rs.40 lakh) a year, one of the top offers received this year. The other companies that participated in the recruitment were Schlumberger, Google and Yahoo! Most of the companies recruited students only in the first two or three days.

"The average salary of a student, who got recruited this year, is about Rs. 8.5 lakh a year and the maximum salary that students' got was over Rs. 40 lakh a year. This is more than last year's average of Rs.6 lakh a year," Jayakumar said.
