The university has already witnessed a record number of admissions in the last four months and the total figure for all courses, including M. Phil, has crossed 58,000 this academic year against the target of 35,000. Of this, the admission figure for M. Phil alone is 24,000. S. Vadivelu, Director of Distance Education, MKU, said that the heavy rush for M. Phil. registration was thanks to the State Government's directive to universities to stop offering the course under the distance education mode. "From January 1, we should not offer M. Phil. through the DDE. This being the last batch, students want to enrol themselves for the course before the last date," Mr. Vadivelu said. The MKU admits students in two batches under the distance education stream calendar year (January to April) and academic year (July to December). According to the Director, the academic year admissions alone have crossed 58,000, which by itself is a "record figure in a single academic year." The last date for admission is December 29 (Friday) and after that the Government's Order on M. Phil. comes into effect. Mr. Vadivelu said response from students within Tamil Nadu and from other States was good as both shared 12,000 each out of the total 24,000 candidates who were admitted to the M. Phil programme. The DDE offered 103 courses, including undergraduate, postgraduate, PG diploma and diploma courses, he said.
