SALEM: Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini inspected the Kakkayan burial ground in ward 12 in Hasthampatti zone, selected for the establishment of a modern gasifier crematorium at Rs. 40 lakh, here on Tuesday. The need for a modern crematorium is strongly felt as many of the burial grounds lacked adequate infrastructure, and were facing severe shortage of space. The city, with a population of over nine lakh, had over 50 conventional burial grounds and burning ghats. But these places did not have adequate facilities. The Corporation had sent a proposal several months ago to the government to set up a new modern crematorium. The government had recently directed the officials to prepare an estimate for the project. Civic officials said that of the total cost, the civic body would get Rs. 20 lakh as government grant. The additional cost would be met from the general fund of the civic body. Consultants would be appointed shortly to prepare a detailed project report. The Mayor, after inspecting the site, discussed with officials the facilities to be created for the project. Senior Corporation officials were present. Meanwhile, the Corporation council, which met recently, had also given its approval for the estimate for the crematorium.
