Cancer camp for TTD staff from today

    TIRUPATI: Indo-American Cancer Institute and Research Centre (IACIRC), Hyderabad, will conduct a three-day mega cancer awareness and diagnosis camp in Tirupati for the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) employees and their dependants, free of cost.

    The camp will be held at the TTD's Central Hospitalhere.The initiative is a result of the increasing concern in the medical circles over the alarming rise of cancer-related cases in the State in the last decade. Revelation by WHO and global medical agencies that breast cancer and cervical cancer are found

    even in women in their twenties has also added weight and resulted in a paradigm shift of focus from treatment to "early detection," according to the organisers of the camp.

    An air-conditioned cancer diagnosis unit on wheels, fitted with state-of-the-art equipment has a mammography unit, X-ray unit, ultrasound system and related gizmos, which are useful in detecting cancer cells, abdominal tumours, unnecessary muscles and extraneous growth in liver, kidney, uterus.

    The camp organisers recommend all married woman to undergo PAP-SMEAR, a modern test, to be "doubly sure".

    Chairperson of the Indo-American institute, Tulasidevi Polavarapu, who is with the New York-based Long Island research institute, is leading the team. Mohan Vamsi, a surgical-medical oncologist and director of IACIRC, Kalpana Raghunath, medical superintendent and an ex-squadron leader of Indian Air Force and Lakshmi Salim, a plastic surgeon, are among the team of 25 specialists.

    TTD chairman B.Karunakar Reddy will inaugurate the camp on Wednesday.
