SALEM: The Salem Corporation has prepared a plan to enhance the living conditions in the slums here at Rs. 11.87 crore under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development programme.
Appalling
Residents in many slums are living under appalling conditions due to lack of basic amenities. Absence of drainage channels and public toilets in these areas cause concern. Many of the slums are yet to be provided with amenities such as protected drinking water, better roads and streetlights. The plan will undertake more than 300 development works to create amenities such as drinking water, toilets, roads, drainage channels, streetlights and concrete paths in the slums. Shelter upgrade will be also undertaken. "The plan will help improve the quality of life of slum dwellers, and create provisions for basic services in a comprehensive manner. We have prepared a detailed project report for Rs. 11.87 crore. The project will cover 113 slums," civic officials said. Of the total sum, the Kondalampatti zone would get a major share of Rs. 4.32 crore; Hasthampatti Rs. 3 crore; Ammapet Rs. 2.80 crore; and Sooramangalam Rs. 1.75 crore, they said.
Council nod
The council gave its approval in its last meeting. The plan would be submitted to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration for approval shortly.
