Over Rs. 93 lakh paid as unemployment allowance

  • 289 applications, the highest, received in Kanpur and Rs. 30.28 lakh disbursed
  • Insured persons entitled to medical care for six months from date of unemployment

    NEW DELHI: The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has paid over Rs.93.13 lakh as unemployment allowance until the end of October under the Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana.

    1,304 applications

    According to an official release, as many as 1,304 applications were received for payment of unemployment allowance under the scheme of which 757 were found eligible while 407 applications were rejected. Another 140 applications are under process.

    Highest number

    The highest number of applications — 289 — was received in Kanpur and an amount of Rs.30.28 lakh was disbursed.

    In Pune and Puducherry, 150 applications each were received and cash benefits of Rs.17.33 lakh and Rs.14.45 lakh respectively were paid. In Goa, 142 people applied for the allowance while 140 applicants sought it in Nagpur and 106 in Andhra Pradesh.

    The scheme

    The Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana has been in operation since April 1, 2005. Under the scheme, allowance is paid to workers for six months who are rendered unemployed involuntarily on account of closure of factories/establishments, retrenchment or permanent invalidity at not less than 50 per cent arising out of non-employment injury.

    Based on average wages

    The allowance paid is equal to the Standard Benefit Rate based on average wages during the last four completed employment periods.

    The insured persons and their family members are also entitled to medical care for a period of six months from the date of unemployment.
