dated December 27, 1956: Role of women in society

Mrs. Lakshmi Menon, President of the All-India Women's Conference, said in Indore on December 26 that a community which neglected the needs of its women neglected itself. Presiding over the 26th annual session of the AIWC, she said women should have full opportunities of development, because they were the custodians of all our social, moral and spiritual values. In communities where women were educated and participated freely in social activities there was less corruption in administration, less indiscipline among the young, greater moral integrity among its people and healthier social values. The AIWC, she added, had been in the field of social and educational work for the past 30 years and would continue this work with added determination. The present condition of the country had made it all the more necessary to revitalise the organisation and "take our legitimate share in building our country."
