Workers urged to end agitation

Staff Reporter

Company says there is considerable progress in talks with workers

KOCHI: The management of Premier Tyres Limited, Kalamasserry, has urged the workers who have been on an agitation to resume work.

In a statement, the company said there was considerable progress in the talks at a meeting convened by the State Additional Labour Commissioner on December 19. Unfortunately, workers began the agitation on the same day as a result of which the production had dwindled.

Later, the workers prevented tyres from being moved out of the company and the work in the company was paralysed since then.

The management said the cost of production at the Kalamasserry plant was higher than that at the Perambra plant though the latter produced products of a higher value.

Hence the demand for pay parity was unjustified, the statement said. The company had already entered into three long-term agreements and the workers had benefited from them.

The statement said the company needed to shift some of the materials from one unit to another as the company's units at various places produced different products.

The management had suggested shifting of the Kalamasserry unit to Rubber Park near Perumbavur with a view to expand operations.

The project would be executed only with the support of the workers and the Government.

The company's plan to set up an Ayurvedic hospital and resort on the 6-acre land near Kalamasserry is part of the diversification plan.

The company has set apart Rs.20 crore for the project which will provide job opportunities to many people and improve the financial position of the company, the statement said.
