Children looked at the six-seater Chetak in awe as it zoomed down to the helipad on the Kozhikode Medical College grounds. The helicopter was brought here for conducting joy rides as part of the ongoing Malabar Shopping Festival. Many of the local people arrived on Monday with their families just to see the helicopter. Curious children touched the helicopter, which they thought looked like a dragonfly. A huge crowd gathered near the helipad to go on a ride. The fee is Rs.1,000 for a person. North Zone Inspector General of Police M.N. Krishnamurthy inaugurated the helicopter ride. Among the keen `riders' on the inaugural day were Communist Party of India (Marxist) councillors Kanangot Haridas and Renuka Devi and the former Mayor and Kerala Sports Council president T.P. Dasan and the Leader of the Opposition P. Mamukoya Haji. After the ride, which lasted less than 10 minutes, Renuka Devi said: "I didn't know that our city looked more beautiful when viewed from the sky." Helicopter rides are conducted from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will be on till Sunday.
