The formal inauguration of the Malabar Shopping Festival was a morale booster for the people of the region. The programme was impressive on many counts. The illumination, firework displays and music were spectacular, thanks to the organisers. But most impressive was the programme held to felicitate prominent personalities of the region. They were called upon to come to the podium. The personalities were introduced to the audience and their contributions lauded. Equally impressive was the list of speakers comprising Ministers and Members of Parliament. Malabar is home to many such stalwarts. There were many people who could not make it to the function. Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, who inaugurated the festival, said that he was the only person present on the stage who did not belong to the region. Politicians, film actors, historians, artists, sportspersons, social activists were all present at the programme. P.T. Usha, Chemmancheri Kunhiraman Nair, M.G.S. Narayanan and Mamu Koya were also present. The programme turned out to be a memorable one.
