Puducherry: Deputy Inspector General of Police S. Vasudeva Rao called upon the youth to develop habit of reading books of great philosophers, literary savants and eminent poets to develop their personality and to preserve the heritage and culture of the nation. Distributing prizes to the publishers on the concluding day of the 11-day 10th annual book exhibition conducted by Puducherry Cooperative Book Society at Vel Sokkanathan Thirumana Nilayam here on Tuesday, he said that books were constant companions and nothing could replace their efficacy. Vasudeva Rao was sorry to see that urban disorganisation was happening because of failure to adhere to values. He also distributed prizes to winners of competitions conducted as part of the fair. Chairperson of the Book Society M.K. Sayekumari said that the advent of computers appeared to have caused setback in the reading habit. The Director of the Society Panch Ramalingam, who welcomed those present, said that a large number of students, representatives of educational institutions visited the fair and the total sale proceeds exceeded Rs. 24 lakh. More than 70 publishers from Puducherry and neighbouring Tamil Nadu participated. Tamil books were selling like hot cakes this year, he said. The Director of UGC Academic Staff College of Pondicherry University Ms. Mamota Das also spoke. Among those present included Secretary of the Society G. Murugan and its member Majid.
