DINDIGUL: Over five lakh pairs of free saris and dhotis would be distributed to people coming the below poverty line category in the district for Pongal festival. The exercise is expected to begin in the first week of January. Sources in the Revenue Department said that the district administration received 90 per of total requirements from various destinations. The Dindigul taluk office alone has received 1.10 lakh sets of saris and dhotis, out of the total requirement of 1.38 lakh meant for distribution, from Madurai. The rest would reach the district within a day or two. Revenue officials have started dispatching the saris and dhotis to the respective ration shops in all panchyats for a hassle-free distribution. Those drawing a monthly salary of Rs.2,000 or less alone are eligible for availing this scheme. Ration card is the prime identity proof and no other proof would be taken in to consideration. Village Administrative Officers would verify beneficiaries and distribute tokens with their name and address. To avoid long queues, each ration shop would distribute saris and dhotis to 100 beneficiaries only. Cooperative banks would also be involved to expedite up distribution process, officials added.
