"Release water from Palayam channel"

Staff Reporter

To save paddy crops cultivated on over 3,000 acres

APPEAL: A group of farmers from Ariyakulam near Tirunelveli, who submitted a petition to the Collector on Tuesday.

TIRUNELVELI : A group of farmers from Ariyakulam near here submitted a petition to the Collector on Tuesday, seeking release of water from the Palayam channel to their irrigation tanks to save the standing crops.

The petitioners said more than 10 tanks around Palayamkottai, including Uththiriyakulam, Ariyakulam and Sirukulam did not receive water during the monsoon and there was no adequate water in the water body.

To make things worse, water was not released from the Palayam channel to these tanks, leaving the farmers, who had cultivated paddy on over 3,000 acres in the lurch.

Since the standing crop is about to wilt, the district administration should take steps to release water to the tanks.

"Or else, we'll block traffic on the Tirunelveli - Tuticorin highway on Thursday," said the president of Ariyakulam panchayat, Mayandi.

The farmers staged a demonstration, pressing their demand. A group of women from Kurichi near Melapalayam submitted a petition to the Collector, seeking free LPG connection with gas stove.
