CHENNAI: The Indian market for writing instruments and notebooks is expected to maintain the healthy 30 per cent compounded annual growth for at least next five years, according to the Confederation of Indian Industry. Quoting senior executives of leading companies, it said the Rs.4,500-crore market was set to witness an increased competition from international players in the premium segment, and Chinese imports in the low-end segment. The economic boom witnessed in the country, an expanding market base and the increased competition were the key drivers of the growth, said a CII release on the `KideX 2006' exhibition that concluded here on Sunday. The exhibition, which opened on Friday, received over 60,000 visitors. Participating in the event that focussed on kids, the executives said that with increased affordability, the supply patterns were changing drastically. Consumers in the writing instruments market, estimated at Rs.1,500 crore, were opting for new pens instead of refilling, they said.
