BANGALORE: The Chikmagalur district Superintendent of Police Vipul Kumar on Tuesday said they were yet to establish the identity of the man who was killed in an encounter with the police in Sringeri taluk on Monday night. Mr. Kumar told The Hindu over telephone from Chikmagalur that initially the dead man was identified as Vikram Gowda by a few people who had seen him two-and-a-half years ago. They claimed that the physical and facial features of the dead matched with that of Vikram Gowda. When the police tried to confirm the identity of the dead, they found that it was not Vikram Gowda. "A man was killed in the encounter and his body has been kept at the Sringeri Government hospital," Mr. Kumar said. Additional Director-General of Police Shankar M. Bidari told The Hindu here that the police received specific information on Monday that a group of naxalites were coming to a village near Kigga in Sringeri taluk to hold a meeting. The members of the Anti-Naxalite Force led by the Sringeri Circle Inspector rushed to the village and noticed a group of naxalites moving in the area. When the police asked them to surrender, the naxalites opened fire, Mr. Bidari said. The police returned the fire. While combing the area, the police found a body on Tuesday. . The police found a 303 rifle lying near the body.
