RAIPUR: The Executive Committee of the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) has allotted the second Commonwealth championship to be held in August next year to Kolkata. The high-profile tournament, with a budget of Rs.3 crores, will be held at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. Informing this after the committee's meeting, Rathin Ray Chaudhury, Associate Secretary (Events), VFI, said among other things, the house discussed the Asian Games debacle, strict measures to curb cheating in different age group tournaments and the dates for the National league and the National Games. Accordingly, the National Games Organising Committee has been requested to conduct the volleyball events from February 8 to 13, 2007 and basketball from February 14 to 18, 2007. Mr. Ray Chaudhury said this would enable the laying of the teraflex courts. The top eight teams as per the last National standings, both in the men and women's sections, would participate in the National Games. The three legs of the National league preliminaries will be held from February 1 to 5, 2007 at Renukoot (U.P.), February 24 to March 4, 2007 at Pyyanur (Kerala) and February 27 to March 4, 2007 at Thoothukudi (TN). The Commonwealth volleyball championship is being revived after a gap of 24 years by the VFI. The first meet was hosted by England in 1982. National teams from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and England will be among the 12 countries expected to take part.
