Kalyan wrecks Karnataka

Sports Reporter

Andhra takes first innings lead

ANANTAPUR: Andhra achieved its primary objective of clinching the first innings lead (127 runs) against Karnataka on day two which witnessed a below-par performance by the Karnataka batsmen in the Elite Group B super league Ranji match at RDT Sports Complex here on Tuesday.

In reply to Andhra's moderate 238, Karnataka was skittled out for a paltry 111, with Andhra pace trio — Kalyan Krishna (six for 43), K.S. Shahabuddin and Vijay Kumar running through the visitor's line-up effortlessly.

The wrecker-in-chief Kalyan dismantled the top and middle order with his perfect line and length bowling. The host bowlers seldom deviated from the basics.

Andhra bowlers kept the ball up and waited for the batsmen to commit mistakes which they did aplenty. With ball holding and coming, stroke playing was not easy at all for the visiting team batsmen. They lacked both application and technique for most of them fell to indiscreet strokes.

Good omen

Change of ball in the 10th over proved to a good omen for the host as Shahabuddin struck the first blow luring Robin Uttappa to unleash an uppish stroke. Middle order batsmen C. Raghu played a horrendous stroke perishing at wide mid-off off Kalyan.

With wickets falling like nine pins, the onus was on former international Sunil Joshi to avert the follow on. Joshi, along with Vinay Kumar took the fight into the enemy camp by resorting to a few lusty hits, succeeding in crossing the cut-off point.

Confident start

Andhra began its second innings on a confident note by registering 64 for the loss of MSK Prasad's wicket. Andhra is now ahead with 191 runs with nine wickets still in the kitty.

Earlier, Andhra, resuming at 224 for nine in its first innings was all out for 238 with ASK Varma (103) reaching the coveted three-figure mark. He brought his hundred in style by hoisting left-arm spinner Appanna for a massive six.
