Refusal to accept premium of crop insurance for rabi crops

ANANTAPUR: Farmers allegedly attacked Putluru branch of the Andhra Pragati Grameena Bank in the district on Tuesday after the bank staff refused to accept the premium of crop insurance for the rabi crops. Tuesday was the last day for payment of the premium.

According to the information reaching here, the farmers laid a siege to the bank branch, attacked branch manager Surya Reddy and other staff with stones when the manager refused to accept the premium after the regular bank business hours. The manager ran into his chamber and bolted the door from inside.

Later, the farmers turned their ire on the staff of the bank and ransacked the office.

A police team led by Circle Inspector Ramakanth and Sub Inspector Ramakrishna Reddy rushed to the bank to bring the situation under control. They held talks with the bank manager and staff and asked them to pursue the matter with the higher authorities.

The farmers were pacified after the police assurance that the bank manager would speak to higher authorities in this regard.

The attack was spontaneous and nobody had instigated it, the police said. Later, the CPI and Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham activists led the farmers in demanding the bank officials to extend the date for payment of crop insurance premium.
