Onus on MPDOs to recover loans

Staff Reporter

The corporation has given financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 4 crores in the district since but recovered only Rs. 1.3 crores till November 2004

ANANTAPUR: With a view to improving its financial position by recovering the loans given since its inception, the Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Cooperative Finance Corporation has fixed monthly targets of recovery to Mandal Parishad Development Officers with the cooperation of Collectors.

Each MPDO has been given a target of recovering at least Rs. 50,000 per month from the beneficiaries of the corporation who have availed themselves of loans for different self-employment activities but have not repaid them. However, the MPDOs are learnt to have failed to concentrate on the issue so far due to their preoccupation with the implementation other priority welfare schemes like Indiramma.

The corporation had given away financial assistance of about Rs. 4 crores in the district since its inception, but the recovery was only Rs. 1.3 crores till November 2004, when a special drive was launched for recovery of long pending dues from beneficiaries. The corporation had recovered Rs. 68 lakhs in the special driver since November 2004 in the district.

Though the corporation head office has fixed a target of Rs. 6 lakhs recovery per month to the district, the district unit has been struggling hard to collect even half of the target. Shortage of staff is being attributed as one of the reasons for poor recovery.

Chronic defaulters

When contacted, Executive Director of the corporation in the district V. Raghuramaiah has stated they have already identified 212 beneficiaries as chronic defaulters in the district. Recovery of the assistance has been good from those who have availed education loans, he said. On the shortage of staff Mr. Raghuramaiah says he has written to the Collector seeking at least a couple of senior assistants, even on deputation.
