ANANTAPUR: The Congress Government has failed to solve the problems of the farming community though it had promised to put an end to their woes before wresting power in the State, leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI) have alleged. They feel that farmers woes can be resolved only with struggles. At a meeting organised to celebrate the 81st anniversary of the founding of the CPI at Rachanapalli near here on Tuesday, State president of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham and former legislator K. Ramakrishna and district secretary of CPI, M.V. Ramana, said more than 2,000 farmers had ended their lives during the Congress rule so far. Some 460 had committed suicide during the last six months alone.
Raghuveera blamed
However, Minister for Agriculture N. Raghuveera Reddy was trying to escape the responsibility of farmers' suicides by claiming that their Government had been taking care of the farmers better than the previous regime, they said. However, no concrete steps had been taken so far to pull out the farmers from distress conditions, the CPI leader noted. On the issue of lands, the CPI leaders asked Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Opposition Leader N. Chandrababu Naidu to distribute their large extent of benami lands to the poor, if they were sincere.
