3 police personnel suspended

Coimbatore: The Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, A.T. Duraikumar, on Tuesday suspended three head constables for the escape of suspects from police custody in two different incidents at Sulur and Udumalpet police stations on Sunday and Monday.

According to police, Balan (40), a rice merchant running various businesses such as travel agency and real estate, was brought to the police station on Sunday for questioning in connection with a cheating case.

When, Balan was kept at the station for inquiry, he is said to have escaped under the pretext of attending the nature's call. The SP after an inquiry ordered the suspension of a head constable. Similarly, two head constables were placed under suspension following the escape of a suspect detained at the Sulur Police Station on Monday. It is learnt that Sankar alias Saravanan of Chennai was picked up for questioning in connection with a mobile phone theft case. — Staff Reporter

West Bengal IGP injured in accident

MADURAI: The Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) of West Bengal, Sadaan Chandra Mandal (58), was injured, while his wife, daughter and car driver died in a road accident at Sivarakottai in the district on Tuesday. According to police sources, the car was coming to Madurai from Kanyakumari when it collided head-on with a State-owned bus. Mr. Mandal's daughter S. Sulekha (16) and driver K. Mohammed Ali (35) of Chennai died on the spot. The official's wife, S. Lakshmi Mandal (52), who was rushed to a private hospital in Madurai, was declared dead. The bodies were shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem. The condition of Mr. Mandal was said to be stable. Staff Reporter

Murasoli award for Jayakanthan

CHENNAI: The Murasoli Trust has decided to confer its annual awards for 2006 on writer D. Jayakanthan, Tamil scholar Silamboli Chellappan and actor Manorama for their outstanding contribution to Tamil language, literature and culture.

A release issued by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam headquarters here said they would be honoured with the award named after founder of `Mursoli' and the `Murasoli Trust' M. Karunanidhi. Each of them would be handed over a purse of Rs. 1 lakh. The awards would be conferred on them by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi at a function to be presided over by Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan in Chennai on January 23, 2007. — Special Correspondent

MDMK expels

district secretary

CHENNAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Tuesday expelled its Tiruvarur district secretary K.S.S. Thiagabari from the primary membership of the party. In a statement here, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said Mr. Thiagabari was expelled for violating the party discipline. M. Muppal would be in-charge of the MDMK's Tiruvarur district unit, he said. — Special Correspondent

but books

CHENNAI: The State Government has asked the organisers of official functions to present books to VIPs instead of honouring them with garlands and shawls.
