Lok Satta registered as political party

HYDERABAD: The State Election Commission has registered Lok Satta as a political party without a reserved symbol. The registration shall not entitle the party to the reservation of any exclusive symbol. However, the candidates set up by it in local body elections (held on party basis) would be entitled to preferential treatment over independent candidates in allotment of free symbols, the commission said on Tuesday .— Special Correspondent

Farmer ends life

KURNOOL: A farmer, Swamanna, 48, committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Bhaskarapuram in Kurnool district on Tuesday. Heavy loss incurred in agriculture is said to be the reason for the extreme step. — Special Correspondent

Plea for wage hike

HYDERABAD: The State Council of AITUC has appealed to the Government to increase wages of field assistants involved in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme and also payment of allowances to them. P.J.Chandrasekara Rao, general secretary, in a letter to the Chief Minister recalled Dr. Reddy's assurance to the council leaders in October to pay Rs.80 a day to the workers and to increase the wages of field assistants from Rs.1,500 to Rs. 4,000.

Effigies burnt

NIZAMABAD: The IIT Sadhana Samiti activists burnt effigies of Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy and Ministers D. Srinivas and Mohammad Ali Shabbir here protesting against their "failure" in bringing the Indian Institute of Technology to Basar. Samiti convenor Venugopal Yadav called upon all students to cooperate with the district-wise rasta-roko planned on the issue on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Appeal to Manmohan

HYDERABAD: All-India Majlis Tameer-e-Millat urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take action against any person who issues "provocative" statements or circulates "mischievous" rumours on Babri Masjid and death sentence to Afzal Guru. Mohd. Abdul Rahim Quraishi, president, in a statement issued here on Tuesday referred to the speeches of BJP leaders at the recent National Executive in Lucknow challenging the UP Government to rebuild the mosque. — Special Correspondent

Action sought

Hyderabad: The Struggle Committee Against Caste Discrimination has demanded stringent action against persons belonging to upper castes for the recent murder of a Dalit, Dainyudu, of Bachepalli village, in Kurnool district. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, John Wesley, general secretary, wanted the police to register a case against the persons under the Preventions of Atrocities against SCs/STs Act. — Special Correspondent

Award for POW leader

HYDERABAD: Progressive Organisation for Women president V. Sandhya, and Chandralatha, a writer from Nellore, have been selected for the Seventh Rangavalli Memorial Awards.

A press release on Tuesday said Ms. Sandhya would receive a cash prize of Rs.25,000 for her contribution as an activist and Ms. Chandralatha, Rs. 5,000, for her story (`Vivarnam') at a function to be held on December 31at City Central Library, Chikkadpally. December 31 is the birth date of Rangavalli, who was killed in an encounter on November 1, 1999. — Special Correspondent
