Special Correspondent
(A PTI report said his name was reportedly among the names mentioned by her in her letters before her disappearance). The resignation has been forwarded to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav by Mr. Ajit Singh. Former Irrigation Minister and senior RLD leader Merajuddin Ahmed resigned on Monday from the party after his name allegedly figured in the CD prepared by Kavita Rani, reportedly at Mr. Ahmed's Lucknow residence. Denying his involvement in the case, the former Minister said that he had been framed by his detractors. The Meerut police are yet to recover the CD notwithstanding the arrest of the main accused, Ravindra Pradhan. They have not been able to recover the body of Ms. Rani following claims that she had probably been murdered. Even as the police version left several unanswered questions, the Congress demanded an independent inquiry into the case. Chief spokesperson of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Akhilesh Pratap Singh said the manner in which the police had cracked the case within 24 hours suggested that efforts were being made to implicate others in order to shield some influential persons.
