TN women start well

RAIPUR: Tamil Nadu women began their campaign in the 55th senior National volleyball championship with a bang, getting the better of last year's semifinalist Andhra Pradesh 3-2 in the preliminary Group B league match at the Netaji Subhas Stadium here on Tuesday.

In another important fixture of the same group, last year's runner-up Kerala overpowered Delhi 3-0.

On a day when the match schedule was not strictly adhered to owing lackadaisical approach, Tamil Nadu ladies proved to be the grittier lot against AP. Combining well and playing with a lot of understanding, Tamil Nadu triumphed in the match that lasted 100 minutes.

Defending men's champion Railways and runner-up Services too started on a winning note in their respective groups but in contrasting style. Services, playing in Group B, cantered to an easy 3-0 win over Karnataka while Railways subdued a fighting TN outfit 3-1 in a Group A game.

The first set of the games for the day, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. was delayed by half an hour with match officials and teams alike taking it rather easy. This resulted in the last set of matches beginning well beyond the starting time of 5-30 p.m.

The results:

Men (Group A): Railways bt TN 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 20-25, 25-11).

Group B: Services bt Karnataka 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-20).

Group C: Jharkhand bt J&K 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 25-19, 16-25, 15-11).

Group D: Gujarat bt A&N 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-19); UP bt Delhi 3-1 (25-18, 8-25, 25-21, 28-26).

Group E: Chandigarh bt Orissa 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-13); AP bt Assam 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-19).

Group F: HP bt MP 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-23); West Bengal w/o Pondicherry.

Women (Group A): Chandigarh bt Karnataka 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-13, 25-21).

Group B: Kerala bt Delhi 3-0 (26-24, 25-10, 25-14); TN bt AP 3-2 (29-27, 19-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-10).

Group C: MP bt J&K 3-1 (21-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-8).

Group D: Bihar bt Uttaranchal 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-14); Haryana w/o Mizoram.
