Mulayam rules out CBI probe in Kavita Rani murder case

Jhabua (Madhya Pradesh): Ruling out a CBI probe in the Kavita Rani murder case, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav said on Tuesday that no Minister in his Government would be spared if found guilty.

"The case [Kavita Rani's murder] will not be handed over to the CBI as it will not serve the purpose, but if the involvement of any Minister is proved in the case, then he will not be spared," Mr. Singh said.

Minister resigns

A Lucknow report said that Minister of State for Food Processing and Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Babu Lal resigned from the Ministry on Tuesday over the issue of the murder of Meerut lecturer Kavita Rani.

Mr. Lal, whose name was among the several allegedly mentioned by Kavita in her letters before her disappearance in October, sent in his resignation to RLD chief Ajit Singh, who forwarded it to the Chief Minister.

RLD spokesman Anil Dubey said that although Mr. Lal's involvement in the case had been denied by the police, he had resigned on moral grounds.

The RLD alleged that an attempt was being made to shield Minister for Basic Education Kiranpal Singh (of the Samajwadi Party) whose name had also figured in the case.

"Now that our leaders have resigned, it should be followed by the SP Minister," RLD sources demanded. - PTI
